2013 Fantasy Baseball Rankings: First Basemen

This is the second position covered in my series of Fantasy Baseball Rankings. I hope you enjoyed my catcher rankings (say no to Joe Mauer). I used fantasypros.com (an incredible resource) and made my own projections based off of theirs. I then compared my projections with their ADP to determine overvalued and undervalued players.

Tiers and which round (12 team) I would select players of that tier

Tier 1: Albert Pujols, Joey Votto, Prince Fielder (1st rounders)

Tier 2: Adrian Gonzalez, Edwin Encarnacion, Paul Goldschmidt, Billy Butler, Freddie Freeman, Mark Teixiera (Rounds 3-5)

Tier 3: Mark Trumbo, Anthony Rizzo, Allen Craig, David Ortiz, Ike Davis, Adam LaRoche, Paul Konerko, Eric Hosmer, Adam Dunn, Chris Davis, Ryan Howard (Rounds 7-12)

Tier 4: Lance Berkman, Nick Swisher, Garrett Jones, Kendrys Morales, Michael Cuddyer, Justin Morneau, Corey Hart, Yonder Alonso (Late Round Fliers)

*Dual eligibility note: Players that are 1B/OF were listed in here, but players with dual eligibility in more offensively challenged positions will go towards that position (Posey as a catcher, Youk at 3B, etc.)

Overvalued: Allen Craig (honorable mention Ryan Howard)

I never thought I would be typing Allen Craig’s name along with overrated, since he has been an incredible investment off the scrap heap for three years now. However now he is only first base and outfield eligible and he is being drafted in the mid-fourth round, ahead of Billy Butler, Paul Goldschmidt and Freddie Freeman. Allen Craig is a fragile man who has lost the multi-position eligibility that had made him so valuable. I am a non-believer in the entire Phillies offense (and defense). I expect regression out of Utley and Rollins, with Revere maintaining an OBP in the 320 range. In the 8th-round there are a half dozen players I’d rather have than “known commodity” Ryan Howard.

Undervalued: Freddie Freeman (honorable mention Lance Berkman)

Freeman is just 23 years old, and I expect the Braves offense to be a source of fantasy power for owners. Freeman was good for 91/23/94/2 through an eye-injury in a pre-Upton Braves offense. If Freeman falls into the 7th-round, grab him. Lance Berkman should slide into the 3-spot on the Texas Rangers offense, playing half of his games in Arlington. Sign me up for a late-round flyer. Huge return on this investment in my opinion

Who I will take: Joey Votto, Lance Berkman

Joey Votto and I are soulmates. He always seems to fall to me and I always seem to have a good time when we are together. In mock drafts thus far Votto has been slipping to me at the 9th, 10th and even 12th picks. He helps all around, from double digit steals, to a great batting eye, to mashing taters. Joey Votto, what a stud. I’ll also definitely be taking a late round flyer on Lance Berkman (please stay healthy, Lance).
