Re-Rank: Catchers

We preached in the preseason that catching, a historically shallow position, is as deep as ever in 2013. Well it is deep, but unfortunately some of us Lucroy, Montero, VMart or Ruiz owners have been playing catcher roulette this season in 12-team mixed leagues. Below is our re-rank for 5X5 Yahoo Pro Roto Leagues.

Player Name   Team
Buster Posey SF 1
Carlos Santana CLE 2
Yadier Molina STL 3
Joe Mauer MIN 4
Wilin Rosario COL 5
Matt Wieters BAL 6
Mike Napoli BOS 7
Brian McCann ATL 8
Salvador Perez KC 9
Victor Martinez DET 10
Miguel Montero ARI 11
Jonathan Lucroy MIL 12
Yasmani Grandal SD 13
Carlos Ruiz PHI 14
J.P. Arencibia TOR 15
Evan Gattis ATL 16
Jarrod Saltalamacchia BOS 17
Russell Martin PIT 18
Ryan Doumit MIN 19
A.J. Pierzynski TEX 20
Yan Gomes CLE 21
John Buck NYM 22
Jason Castro HOU 23

Buy High: Matt Wieters. I have never been a huge Matt Wieters fan in terms of fantasy, because his perceived value has always exceeded his production. However, it appears his dip in average can be attributed to poor luck on balls in play, and as a part of an elite offense hitting in Camden Yards, I expect his production to be among the top half of C1’s for the remainder of the season.

Sell High: Joe Mauer. I’m just not a fan and it is well documented. His batting average is due for a regression and as part of an anemic offense in a pitcher’s park, he will fail to meet expectations. If you can deal him for Wieters and another top 100 player, I’d pull the trigger.

Buy Low: Carlos Ruiz. He should be back in less than two weeks and I believe he will be a top 10 catcher from then onward. He is available at discount after a poor start, but I will chalk that up to a small sample size and play catcher roulette with Ruiz as his DL stint comes to a close. Don’t forget about Chooch!

Sell Low: JP Arencibia. Five walks. Sixty-Six strikeouts. Ew. If you can get something for  his solid start, do it.
